Health literacy
and language were mentioned as barriers that
hindered African immigrants from attaining preventative
services and screenings. One respondent
said that she does not fully understand her doctor
and often has to ask for clarification. “Sometime
she can speak this doctor language, I don’t understand
a thing” (unscreened woman). “If they speak
like the same language they tell you everything
from start to the end and you’ll know exactly what
they’re saying and what they’re doing” (unscreened
man).
