Although it is not known if the RV particles were infectious, viable
F-RNA coliphages were readily detected on the beef subprimals,
which indicates a risk that infectious RV particles could be present.
As RV is associated with the intestinal tract as well as with viremia,
meat must be thoroughly cooked to control the risk of foodborne
transmission. Rotavirus is ranked as a foodborne zoonotic agent of
significant importance in Belgium through an evidence based
semiquantitative analysis that was carried out to support food
safety policy makers to formulate effective monitoring programs
(Cardoen et al., 2009).
