insisted that an older male servant accompany her. She felt cared for when her
Tuan read the letters she received to make sure she was not being seduced at a
tender age. She felt privileged to be given clothes and to be taught, unlike people
from her own village, to be "neat" and "cleann-even as she recalled trembling
in fear when her Tuan caught her unawares with her hair not pulled back
into the requisite bun
