HYDROGRAPHER
The Hydrographer works in the Water Management section and is responsible for the calibration of the structures in the project area. He is also responsible for the stock keeping and distribution of staff gauges, cm and liter scales, floating indicators and other accessories for discharge measurements. He is reports directly to the Operation Engineer.
DUTIES
The main duties of the Hydrographer are :
- Calibration and re-calibration (at least once in 5 years) of all key structures in the project area.
- Compiling and cross checking the calibration field data and processing them.
- Preparing the discharge tables and distributing them to the respective field staff.
- Advising the field staff in proper discharge measurements.
- Supervising the (re) installation of all accessories required for proper discharge measurements.
- Surveying the levels of staff gauges upstream and downstream of ‘ key structures’ before each irrigation season.
- Inspection of the zero-setting of all gates in the ‘ key structures’ before each irrigation season.
- Taking part as trainer in regular refresher courses for the field staff particularly regarding discharge measurements, zero-setting, calibration, etc.
The hydrographer should at least have one assistant for his field work and preferably a pick- up car or at least a motorcycle. In large projects there may be a separate surveyor to whom also other survey work on maintenance and rehabilitation has been assigned
