Authors' conclusions
There is a pressing need for quality research in this area. There is no firm evidence to make strong predictions about the type of intervention that is likely to be effective in promoting the breast- feeding or healthy feeding of infants in the UK. It is important to identify when and how the promotion might best be delivered, and by whom and to whom. There is also a need to identify issues important to mothers, and their partners and families, as a foundation for developing future interventions. Use of rapidly developing qualitative methodologies may facilitate important advances in our understanding of these issues.
