4. Discussion
The analysis bymouse bioassay,HPLC-FLD, and ESI-MS
clearly indicated the presence of PSP toxins in the crab viscera,
so this is the first observation of PSP toxins in T. acutidens. The
crab probably accumulated the PSP toxins from toxic prey
organisms such asmussels, since we often observed the crab to
prey onmussels at the sampling point. With regard to the toxin
content, the crabs in 1999 had considerably higher contents
compared with those in 2000. As well as the crabs, the mussels
in 1999 also showed higher contents than those in 2000. The
correspondence of the variability in toxin abundance suggests
that the toxin content of the crab might be affected by those of
the prey shellfish. However, as for the profiles of the toxins,
therewas a difference between the crabs and the mussels in the
1999 sample. The portion of N1–Htoxin in the crab was twice
that of the N1–OH toxin, while N1–H toxin in the mussels
