้how your bike moves
Gears really get things. most gears are wheels with teeth. look at the bicycle at the bottom of the page. a bicycle has two gears. one is joined to the pedals a pedal gear. the other is in the center of the back wheel a rear gear. a chain links,or engage, these two gears. as you move the pedals, the chain moves too. the chain fits into the toothed gears and turns the back wheel.
what makes a bicycle? a metal bar, or axle, runs from the pedal to the center of the pedal gear. when the rider steps on the pedal, the axle turns, causing the gear to turn too. this makes the chain move. as the chain engages the rear gear, it turn on its axle. now both wheels are in motion.
the size of a gear is important. when both gears are the same size, they turn at the same speed. but when one gear is larger than the other, the smaller gear turns faster. on the bicycle, the pedal gear is larger than the rear gear. for every turn of the larger pedal gear, the rear gear turns several times. therefore, once a biker gets going, it is easier to travel at a higher speed.
