was necessary to determine a satisfactory minimum water volume for use
in measuring weight loss from the control block. Gypsum blocks were
held for 24 h in a series of plastic buckets ranging from 1 to 25 liters of
tap water (0 ppt salinity) at 25°C. Each trial was replicated four times.

Gypsum blocks were placed in a large tank (95 m 3) and periodically
removed to calculate weight loss over time. Three gypsum blocks were
removed from the tank for weighing at 2-h intervals for a 24-h period;
afterwards, three gypsum blocks were removed every 24 h for 20 days.
