and the mean percent clover content of the mixed herbage was determined (Table 11-15). Without nitrogen fertilizer white clover made up 30.7% of the mixture over a six-year period. At rates of 28 and 56 kg/ha (25 and 50 lb/ac) of nitrogen, clover content dropped to 27.6 and 24.1%, respectively, indicating the extent to which the increased growth of the grass competed with the legume. As nitrogen rates increased, clover content decreased rapidly, in the first year as well as in subsequent years.
