We have observed many industrial examples of ways in which information can become distorted. As far as quotations are concerned, if an incorrect specification was sent through to a company, some supply companies would quote directly against the specification so as to get the job, win the order knowing the problems and supply the system according to the specification. When the project reached a stage where it was not appropriate to change supplier, the customer would be notified of the problems and the corrections made at an extra cost but still to be absorbed by the supplier. Information withholding can similarly operate in the other direction. For example, if a customer knows that a product life cycle is coming to an end, the customer would not tell the supplier so that he cannot prematurely seek alternative business from a different customer. The supplier is then likely to be left with obsolete stocks built up in the expectation of receiving further orders but which he is now unable to sell.
