placed on fresh MS2 medium developed into young
sporophytes (Fig. 5B) within 4 weeks. The developing
embryo had no shoot–root axis, but one that corresponded to
the shoot–foot axis while the root began to develop laterally
below the first leaf-cycle (Fig. 5A). The root which
developed lateral to the shoot–foot axis was either single
or branched out dichotomously. The sporophyte already
demonstrated first pre-leaf stages and leaves proper as well
as a lateral embryonal root with numerous hairs below the
first leaf-cycle (Fig. 5B). In the next stage, the plantlet
formed numerous proper leaves and roots became visible.
After 8 weeks, dichotomies appeared (Fig. 5C). After 6
months a sporophyte developed numerous lateral shoots and
roots (Fig. 5D).
