The founding of the country’s first medical school, Siriraj Hospital in 1889 marked the beginning of higher education in Thailand. Other establishments which were subsequently opened included the law school in the Ministry of Justice in 1897, the Royal Pages School (later known as the Civil Service College) in 1902, and the Engineering School at Hor Wang in 1913. These institutions aimed primarily to train Thai youth for employment in the newly expanded government civil service. In 1917, the first multi-disciplinary university in Thailand was instituted by the Royal Decree, elevating the Civil Service College to university status and renaming it Chulalongkorn University. It incorporated the existing schools of medicine and engineering with the newly created faculties of Arts and Sciences, Law and Political Sciences.
