As can be seen from Figure 12-9, there are a number of conditions that can lead to fear and a variety of responses associated with the emotion. Although fear and anxiety can be caused by a variety of situations, there is also evidence that personality may also influence how much and how often we experience these conditions; that is, anxiety may be a trait as well as a situational state (Taylor, 1951) Anxiety is a very close cousin of fear although it is somewhat more commonly experienced and often lasts longer than fear (Wicker, Payne, Roberson, & Garcia-Falcon, 1985). Because of this close relationship, we will use the concepts interchangeably in this book.
