3.1.1. Gross GHG emissions
Taking into account all the life cycle input/output, emissions
from waste degradation and so on, gross GHG emissions were
quantified. All waste treatment methods emit a considerable
amount of GHG from waste transportation, operational activities
and during waste treatment. The estimated gross GHG emissions
from the different phases of the life cycle of the individual treatment
method is shown in Table 3. Based on these results, the treatment
phase can be identified as a major GHG “hotspot” along the waste
management process chain, as can be seen in Table 3. For instance,
as far as the recycling process is concerned, it consumed a considerable
amount of fossil-based thermal and electric energy at the
treatment phase (see Table 2) and it would result in emissions of
GHG, mainly fossil-based CO2. In the process of anaerobic digestion,
only a small fraction of the produced CH4 (on average 2 g/kg of dry
organic waste) in the reactor can be emitted to the atmosphere due
to unintentional leakages (IPCC, 2006) and it has been accounted as
GHG emissions from the treatment phase. Even though composting
is an aerobic process, there is a possibility of producing CH4 (on
average 4 g/kg of wet waste) and N2O (on average 0.3 g/kg of wet
waste) in the deep layers of the composting piles (IPCC, 2006;
Forster et al., 2007) and these were indicated as GHG emissions in
the treatment phase. Use of organic waste as animal feed also
contributed for GHG emissions, particularly from CH4 emissions
(1.53 g/kg of wet organic waste) from manure management. Landfilling
results in considerable GHG emissions from the treatment
phase due to CH4 generation (22.3 kg/tonne of mix waste) from
waste degradation. Improving the energy use efficiency of the
recycling technologies, improving the conditions of management
practices of anaerobic digestion and composting, and minimising
the disposal of organic waste at the landfill etc. would help to
reduce GHG emissions from the treatment phases of individual
technologies.
