As the world experiences an increasing number of elderly people aged 60 years or over, things that unavoidably come along are problems the elderly people face, including sensory impairment, physical limitation, emotional breakdown, social isolation, and financially unstable condition. We propose a system capable of delivering multimedia from family members, relatives and friends to the elderly people. It is simple but yet effective, using available open source software and technologies, television, Android box, and the Internet. These technologies, tools and equipments are available and affordable even in a developing country like Thailand. The television is analogous to a window to the outside world for the elderly people and may help relieve the feeling of being disconnected and belonging. The system is expected to help sustain the relationships between the elderly people and their family members, relatives and friends. It allows the elderly people to receive multimedia from their family members, relatives and friends without much of technological knowledge and skills. The system is intended to help them stay in touch with others, which in turn would increase the quality of life of the ageing population.
In accordance with the Thai National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission's plan to transform television broadcasting from analog to digital terrestrial by 2015, digital converter boxes will be distributed to every resident in Thailand in about two years. The new service providers will even have more chance to develop new features embedded in the boxes. The elderly people will become a bigger consumer in the future due to the aging society. Since we live in an information society, we should leverage its capabilities. This system can be a new product for the elderly consumers.
