The primary challenge for any individual or project is to ensure alignment with the
organization. This starts by understanding why the organization exists. Each organization has
a Vision, whether it is articulated as such or not. The Vision is a short statement that captures
the essence of the reason the organization exists. Vision statements should be short and easy
to remember; ideally nine words or less. Examples of effective Vision Statements include
Ford’s® “Quality is Job One” and can even be the name of the organization such as “Toys R
Us”®. Longer, wordier Vision Statements lack the clarity of purpose and punch necessary to
provide good focus to the organization. When considering accepting employment with an
organization it is a good practice to become familiar with their Vision, and assess to what
extent the organization actually reflects that Vision.
