Favourite city? Bangkok - as IMHO the only world-class city in Thailand and its bordering neighbours (the nearest others include Hong Kong and maybe Singapore). Downsides include traffic, climate including urban heat-island effects, pollution, lack of planning-design-maintenance underfoot and in-your-eye much of the time, and the grubby commercial attitudes of some folks. Upsides include so many great places to see and things to do, stimulating intellectual opportunities, food-drink-music-arts-living options, stellar design in some places, alternative transport options often able to overcome auto-induced chaos, and much more.
Runner-up city? Chiang Mai. Rather less in Bangkok's areas of strength (possibly aside from design), but also much more pleasant climate, surroundings, and (with fewer exceptions away from the tourist night bazaar) nicer overall vibe of the community.
Favourite town? This is much tougher because of the plethora of candidates. I can't pick a winner, but tops include Roi Et, Phimai & Surin. A bit behind include Phitsanulok-Sukhothai and Kanchanaburi. In each of these cases, the main town as well as the surrounding district or province figure into the sense of enjoyment of these places. Coincidentally or not, each of these areas has at least one stellar archaeological monument that is quieter and less overrun than Ayutthaya or Siem Reap. A colleague researches the influence of ancient culture on life in nearby modern communities of Thailand. I am not up to that, but still wonder at such ancient influences on the modern character of such communities.
