The invA gene, widely distributed
in Salmonella spp., is essential for cell invasion. Located
in the pathogenicity island I, this gene is responsible for
the expression of type-III proteins of the secretion
system. Sequences complementary to the invA gene have
been used as primers for the detection of Salmonella spp.
in food matrices intended for human and animal
consumption and in faecal and water samples (Malorny
et al., 2003; Maciorowski et al., 2005; Germini et al.,
2009).
