D. Switzerland
In 1987, the Swiss government commissioned a feasibility study to examine the use of land along railways and motorways for PV installations. The potential benefits led to the installation of a 100-kW pilot installation in the Swiss Alps; 800 m of highway sound barrier near Chur were used as support structure for this first unit. The system consists of 968 m2 of PV panels, has a predicted output of 145 MWh per year, and is connected to a local 220/380-V utility grid [10].
