Effective biological pretreatment method for enhancing cellulase
performance was investigated. The pretreated substrate (rice
straw) was found to have greatly increased cellulase performance
in accordance with the decreased amount of lignin and hemicellulose
when the two-step pretreatment procedure using CS-1 and
lactic acid bacteria was implemented. These results suggest that
the two-step pretreatment procedure is effective at accelerating
cellulase performance. However, to meet the requirements of
large-scale pretreatment procedures, further studies including
configuration of a suitable process and optimization of culture conditions
for efficient recovery of sugars are needed.
