GOLDEN girl Claudia Fragapane and her fellow Commonwealth Games medallists with Bristol connections are to be honoured with an open-top bus parade and civic reception in the city next week.
The members of England’s table-topping team from the Glasgow games will be joined by locally-based members of the England Women’s Rugby World Cup-winning side, who are also being invited to celebrate their success.
The tour takes place on Thursday, starting at 6pm outside the gymnastics club in Easton where 16-year-old Claudia trains and heading into the city centre.
Five of the eight 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games medallists with a Bristol connection are set to be on the bus: Claudia, who won four gold medals in gymnastics, will be joined by David Luckman, who won gold in shooting, Jazmin Sawyers, who won silver in the long jump, judo bronze medallist Gary Hall and Paul Brown, who won bronze in para-lawn bowls.
They are due to set off from Bristol Hawks Gymnastics Club in Roman Road, heading through Easton to Old Market and then on to Lower Castle Street, Wine Street, High Street, Baldwin Street, Colston Avenue and St Augustine’s Parade before reaching College Green at around 6.30pm.
The reception at City Hall will be hosted by Lord Mayor Alastair Watson, who will be joined in welcoming the stars by Mayor of Bristol George Ferguson and the city’s High Sheriff and Lord Lieutenant, along with councillors and local MPs.
Mr Watson said: “It’s an enormous pleasure and hugely exciting for Bristol to come together to celebrate the success of our city's sporting heroes.
“Bristol is a city which champions sporting excellence, and we are very proud of all the achievements of our local sportsmen and women.”
The open-top bus parade will come just a week after Claudia, from Longwell Green, celebrated picking up her GCSE results from St Bernadette Catholic Secondary School in Whitchurch
