Magesium sulphate (MgSO4) is the agent most commonly used for treatment of
eclampsia and prophylaxis of eclampsia in patients with severe pre-eclampsia. Material toxicity is
rare when MgSO4 is carefully administered and monitored. Keeping this in mind, present operational
study was carried out with objective of operationalizing nursing assessment sheet for administration
of Magnesium Sulphate to mother having pre-eclampsia/eclampsia in clean labour room. The twenty
seven nursing personnel administering MgSO4 to pre-eclampsia/eclampsia mothers during the month
of July-August, 2012 were enrolled by using total enumeration sampling technique. The knowledge
of the subjects was assessed by using questionnaire. The nursing personnel were educated to fill
the nursing assessment sheet regarding dose, drug administration and parameters of monitoring the
patient. Then nursing assessment sheet was given to subjects for filling while monitoring mothers
admitted with preeclampsia/eclampsia. The investigator observed the nursing personnel for 6 hrs
shift while they were administering and caring for the patient receiving magnesium sulphate therapy
by using checklist. The results showed that the subjects were able to fill the nursing assessment
sheet with mean percentage performance of the subjects as 83.9±6.4 with the maximum performance
level of 95%. The mean percentage knowledge of the subjects was 78.9±8.18 with the maximum
knowledge of 90%. There was a strong correlation (r=0.87) between knowledge and performance of
subjects. So, the conclusion was that the nursing assessment sheet was successfully implemented
in clinical settings by nursing personnel resulting in better monitoring and preventing occurrence of
complications to mothers receiving magnesium sulphate therapy.
