The present work discusses a potential novel approach using Viscozyme L action on defatted soy flour for the preparation of “green” and self-crosslinked defatted soy flour based bio-adhesives.
The monosaccharides (reducing sugar) enzymolyzed from polysaccharides in defatted soy flour using Viscozyme L, converts defatted soy flour into defatted soy flour based bio-adhesive containingmore active functional groups. During the defatted soy flour based bio-adhesive curing process, the reducing sugar cross-linked with defatted soy flour protein by the Maillard reaction, leading to a decrease of hydrophilic groups and overall improvement of properties (water resistance and bonding strength). This approach can be easily extended to other biomass where the two components are protein and polysaccharides. In contrast to the petro-based adhesives, defatted soy flour based bio-adhesives do not release toxic components (such as phenol and formaldehyde), which are suit-able for use in interior wood-based composites (e.g., wood-based panel) for building
