Where to start? How to tackle something so old and so ingrained? The international community has made attempts in the past. In 1979, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, or CEDAW. It came into effect in 1981 with 189 signatories, but some, including the United States, still have not ratified it. More than 50 countries that have ratified the convention did so only after registering specific reservations and objections. It’s time for all parties to finally and fully implement the convention—without reservations.
