Unfortunately, a fairly sudden flush of plants is in itself no guarantee that
they originated from buried seed. A classic instance is provided by the
aftermath of the Great Fire of l,ondon in 1666, when Ray iozol noted that
lnndon rocket (sisymbrium irio) appeared profusely within the rubble of
destroyed houses. Both Home (1757) and Candolle (1g32) intelpreted this
phenomenon as evidence for the sudden germination of long-dormant seeds
