Compost technology has also been successfully applied to mop up soils contaminated with organic pollutants [18–20]. Ma et al.[18] applied composting technology to anthracene–contaminated soil where at least 50% anthracene was removed. Applying compost to soil polluted with diesel by Wu et al. [19], 90% of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was completely removed from the contaminated soil samples. The review work of Chenet al. [20] demonstrated the effectiveness of compost technology in remediating organic pollutants such as PAHs, petroleum products, pesticides and chlorophenols in contaminated soils. The organochlorine compounds (known for their persistence in the environment) on composting were reduced by 15% of their original concentration in contaminated soils [21]. The importance of compost for remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants has been discussed in Taiwo [13]. The objectives of this present study are: (1)remediation of metals in polluted soil using compost and plants,(2) determination of bioaccumulation factor of Kenaf plant used for phytoremediation of metals and (3) determination of effects of compost on the physiological parameters of plants.
