CHAPTER TWO
Methodology of the Research
2. Introduction
This chapter will detail the research approach and rationale for the conduct of the
thesis. The dissertation is a systematic review of the intergenerational language
planning research both internationally and more specifically as it involves Wales.
The aim is to evaluate the suitability and value of differing research approaches to
the language policy-making process. In order to analyse the research studies
identified in the review, a discussion will set out the two competing approaches
that underpin the empirical work within language planning, namely the scientific
and naturalistic paradigms. Following on from this, the two analytical tools that
will be integrated into an examination of the identified research studies. These
instruments are the meta-narrative systematic review method and the Context-
Input-Process-Product (CIPP) evaluation model. Each study identified will be
critiqued using an identified critical review protocol and then each study will be
linked to the appropriate element on the CIPP model.
