On special holy days, Buddhist followers should adhere to three additional precepts as well, for a total of eight precepts:
(6) not to eat food after noon,
(7) not to participate in shows, or dancing and singing, or wearing garlands or perfumes,
(8) not to sleep on high or wide beds.
Observing these eight precepts is considered one aspect of being a devout lay (non-monk) Buddhist, known as an upasaka.
