Novice teachers must understand the concept of transfer and know how to avoid narrow instruction-assessment matches that encourage rote learning. The ability to devise transfer tasks is an important component of the more general requirement that teachers be able to select and develop tasks that embody important learning goals. They also need to be able to assess initial understanding before working on extensions, because transfer cannot happen if the student is still struggling with initial concepts. Teachers’ understanding of transfer and knowledge generalization will also be germane when we later consider appropriate preparation for high-stake, external tests and the problems of too much teaching to the test.
