Adapted from the hit 1997 movie of the same name,
The Full Monty tells the story of six unemployed steelworkers
who decide raise money by presenting a strip act at a local club.
With a series of great numbers, The Full Monty makes a triumphant transition
to the musical stage and becomes a show that is comic, touching and always entertaining.
A view confirmed by the show’s success: the original Broadway production,
which opened in October 2000, ran for 770 performances
and received ten Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical,
Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.
The setting of the musical shifts from the film version’s Sheffield to Buffalo
in upstate New York, another depressed industrial city with few prospects
and little hope for those who find themselves out of work.
But the story is essentially the same.
The ex-steelworkers feel emasculated by their lack of earning power
and the problem comes to a head when best friends Jerry and Dave
see a group of women paying a hefty entrance fee to watch a Chippendale-style strip show.
