Today, Semakau Landfill handles roughly 2300 t of incinerated ash and non-incinerable waste on a daily basis (NEA, 2014a). Incinerated ash and these non-incinerable wastes headed for the Semakau Landfill are brought to the Tuas Marine Transfer Station located on the western fringe of the mainland, where these wastes are then loaded onto a barge. The barge is then towed on a 3 h long, 30 km journey to the Semakau Landfill at night (NEA, 2014a). At the Semakau Landfill, trucks then carry the waste into their respective landfill cells. Each cell is then covered with a layer of earth once fully filled. Painstaking efforts have also been taken to replant the mangrove groves removed during the construction of the landfill
