The Chinese cabbage is the main vegetable in the south region of China.Wehad systematically investigated, colleeted, regulated and studie(?)more than 150local Chinese cabbage varieties from south region of Yangtze Hwa(?)River, for in-troduction and breeding new varieties which should be possessed many useful cha-racters.We studied the morphological and biological characteristics and suggest-ed to classify Chinese cabbage varieties. This paper is the result of the morpho-logieal study.1.The morphological variation of non-headed Chinese cabbage could benoted and distinguished as follows:The radical leaves stand erect, spreadling and wide-spreading.The oelioles can be divided into short-petioled and long-petioled in length;flat, round andhalf-round in shape;white and green in colour. The leaf blades can be dividedinto entire and parted in shape. The surface of leaves in the few varieties arehairy and the petioles are winged.According to the number and weight of leaves, the varieties can be divided into the type of leat number and the type of leafweight. The stem leaves are usually clasping or half-clasping,except a few va-rieties are not clasping. The tap roots are swallen in a few varieties.2.We had observed the local varieties of Chinese cabbage in various regionsand discovered the difference of ecological characters in the ecotype varieties groupfrom different geographic distribution in our country. The special combination holding several varieties including early, late andmid-ripening,suitable for green vegetable and pickling had been formed in someancient cities in south China. The combination of varieties may be producted andsupplied around the year in the native land.It is necessary to consider the eco-nomic characters of these varieties are very invariable and accord with specialrequirement, while the objects of introduction or breeding are determined.8.The heredity of economic characters in Chinese cabbage hybrid had beenobserved and summarized, our report could be used as the reference for selectionof parents in vegetable breeding.
