Management and marketing implications of the proposed model
The proposed model presents sport tourist types as moderating a variety of
influencing factors that determine sport tourists’ interest in visiting a destination and
the resulting economic impact on the destination. An implication of the moderating
role of different sport tourism segments on destination outcomes is that those tasked
with economic development or promotion of a sporting event or destination should
examine these influencing factors separately for each sport tourist segment identified.
Thus, this more nuanced approach of identifying a model of economic impact may
reveal that different marketing strategies may be required to attract different types of
sport tourists. It may also offer a method of predicting which sport tourism segments
may have the greatest impact on a destination. Furthermore, sport tourism-related
businesses may also need to manage their product/service offerings and/or marketing
efforts to appeal to each segment of the tourism market rather than assume that all types
of sport tourists are motivated in the same manner to attend an event or destination.
