Weaimtodevelophigh-levelapplicationsofNRthroughtheinnovativeuseofmulti-walledcarbon
nanotubes (MWCNTs)toimprovereinforcingperformanceandthermalresistance.Inthisstudy,we
examinedthestructuresandcharacteristicsofcompositematerialsinwhichNRwasthematrixand
MWCNTswerethe llers.Westudiedthepropertiesofcompositescontainingsurface-activatedMWCNTs
with threedifferentdiameters.TheresultsshowthatthereinforcingperformanceimprovesasMWCNT
diameter decreases,whilethermalresistanceimprovesaswedecreasetheheat-treatmenttemperature.
The latteroccursbecauseadherencebetweenMWCNTsandNRbecomesstrongeratlowerheat-treat-
ment temperatures.Wealsofoundthatforpracticalapplications,weneedtocontrolactivesiteson
MWCNTstobalanceadhesionagainstthermalresistance.

1. Introduction
Carbonnanotubes(CNTs)continuetoattractattentionas
leading materialsinnanotechnology,andmethodsformass
productionanddevelopmentofapplicationsforCNTsarebeing
activelypursued.Atpresent,catalyticchemicalvapordeposition
(CCVD)isincreasinglybeingusedformassproductionofsingle-
layer,double-layer,andmultilayerCNTs [1–3]. CCVDisespecially
effectiveforproducinghigh-purityCNTs;inparticular,several
companiesareproducingabout1000tofmultilayerCNTseach
year.Also,accordingtolong-termforecasts,theyareplanningto
boostproduction.Inrecentyears,developmentalstudieshave
beenunderwaytoexploittheexcellentmechanical,electrical,
andthermalpropertiesofCNTs.Attemptstocreatecomposite
ller materialsstartedin1990,andtherearemanyresearchre-
ports,buttherearefewsuccessfulexamplesofpracticaluse.Itis
noteasytoimprovepropertiesandcreatenewfunctionalities.
Forexample,homogeneousdispersionsofCNTsaredifcultto
achieve,andwehavedifcultyincontrollingnanospaceprop-
ertiesandadhesiontothematrixmaterial,becauseextremely
longandthin(nanometersize)CNTsformaggregatesthatin-
tertwinecomplicatedlywitheachother [4,5]. However,since
2004,compositematerialsofaluminum [6–8], rubber [9–16],
resin [17–19], andceramics [20] havebeensuccessivelydevel-
oped;homogeneousdispersionshavebeenachievedandinter-
facephasesand3Dstructureshavebeencontrolledusingmix-
ing-and-kneadingmethod,whichexploitssingularpropertiesof
