Infants born to self-reported drug abusers at Parkland Memorial Hospital are routinely monitored and referred to a special newborn clinic for observation of possible withdrawal symptoms. From January 1to October 31,1987,52 women reported abusing Methamphetamine during pregnancy, and their infants were referred for observation. We reviewed the medical records of these 52 mothers and their infants with respect to pregnancy outcome and possible adverse fetal effects. We realize that self-reported substance abuse is prone to error because most drugs of abuse are illegal, but our study used information obtained in confidence before delivery by a social worker who was involved with the case.
