The actual change in the share of university graduates in non-university jobs is thus given by CTot= sh99,base99−sh86,base86. The impact of changes in the allocation of workers ceteris paribus is given by CAlloc= sh99,base86−sh86,base86. The impact of changes in the classification of occupations is given by
CClassif=CTot−CAlloc.
Changes in the allocation of university graduates across occupations accounted for 18% of the total change in the proportion of university graduates in non-university jobs. The remaining was accounted for by upgrading of occupations. Once again, the trend is remarkably similar to the USA, where changes in the allocation of workers accounted for 22% of the overall trend, leading GH to conclude that both factors were important driving the overall trend.
