InecoregionI2,twometricswereeliminatedbecause of theirverysmall ranges and six metrics were excluded by the CV test. Inaddition, eight of the remaining metrics were eliminated accordingto the Mann–Whitney U test (p<0.05). Furthermore, 10 metricswere omitted because their IQ<2. We removed these 26 metricsand retained 19 metrics. The redundancy test showed that fourmetrics were highly correlated with the total number of taxa(r > 0.74, p<0.01) and anothertwometrics were correlated with thetotalnumberof taxa (r > 0.60, p<0.01).Thetotalnumberof taxawasselected as a core metric because it had the most information of therichness category. Of the FFG category, % FC was retained. Of thecomposition category, % Bivalvia and % intolerant were highlycorrelated with % FC (r > 0.74, p<0.01). Therefore, % CO wasretained. Four diversity and evenness metrics were retained. However, three of them were highly correlated with the totalnumber of taxa (r > 0.78, p<0.01), and BPwas negatively correlatedwith the total number of taxa (r =0.753, p<0.01). Therefore, BPwas retained. As a metric for pollution tolerance,BMWPwas highlycorrelated with the total number of taxa (r = 0.955, p<0.01), so BIwas retained. Thus, the core metrics of MMIE for ecoregion I2 aretotal number of taxa, % CO, BP, BI, and % FC (Appendix C, Fig. 3).
