Volunteers
A Most People work each day to earn a living. They spend their free time with their family, relatives and friends. Watching televisions, have parties, outdoor dates and many more. However, some people, beside their daily work, they have the hearts to spend time for the needy, the sick, the downhearted and the homeless. They serve as volunteers to help others.
B Volunteers extend their helping hands in many ways. Some visit sick and lonely people. Others look after the children without parents. While others provide home for the homeless. There are also those who take care of the babies with AIDS.
C In a summer, Andy Lipkis planted his first trees. From then on, he thought about the environment. He realized that deforestation has become a serious problem in many countries where trees were being cut down. This reality has prompted him to organize a group of people to plant trees in 1974. He named the group “Tree People.” More and more people join the group everyday, millions of trees were planted everywhere.
D A certain Ruth Brinker, who had no plan to change the world, has a friend known to be an AIDS victim. Together with her friends, Ruth helped him during his time of sufferings. Such event has lead Ruth to start her “Project Open Hand” in 1985. The group prepares food for those people with AIDS. Soon after that they cook over 1,000 meals each day. And this number keeps increasing. Ruth didn’t somehow plan to change the world but then she is making changes in the lives of other people.
E Somewhere in Northern California at the Marine Mammal Center, volunteers help sick ocean mammals like seals, sea lions, and sea otters. After sometime, sick animals become healthy and strong. Motherless baby animals grow big and healthy. And the volunteers work very hard day by day, time by time without getting any pay for the services rendered. Their “pay” is the nice feeling when seeing these animals can return to their homes – the ocean.
F Tracing back twenty or thirty years ago, most volunteers were housewives while their husband works to sustain the basic needs of the family. Presently both men and women volunteer. There are now volunteers from all walks of life. Most volunteers are not rich or famous. They enjoy the feeling as they could help people. Nowadays, facing such serious problems like AIDS and homelessness, our world needs volunteers much more than ever before.
