1. Obtain copies of all bank reconciliations.
2. Trace the bank balance to the confirmation and/or bank statement/passbook.
3. Trace the bank balance to general ledger.
4. Test the addition of the reconciliation.
"5. Verify selected reconciling transactions with supporting document.
5.1 For outstanding cheques, we perform as follows:
- Obtain explanations for all material items not cleared within a reasonable time
- Review subsequent payment date and supporting documents (i.e., receipt, invoice)
- Check with bank statement after year-end date and note the date on which outstanding items are shown on subsequent bank statements
- Check to general ledger and note down the date on which outstanding items are shown on general ledger
5.2 For deposit in transits, we perform as follows:
- Check subsequent receipt date and review supporting documents (i.e., original or copied of cheque) and note down the date of subsequent receipt
and cheque date
- Check subsequent receipt date with bank statement and note down the date
- Check to general ledger and note down the date of posing"
6. Investigate unusual or long outstanding reconciling items.
7. Determine whether the reconciled items should be adjusted/reclassified or outstanding as reconciled item.
8. Determine whether bank reconciliations are properly signed off by the preparer and reviewer.
