Learning to recognise and appropriately express anger is essential for a mature adult. People who do not express their anger are usually afraid of what will happen if they do. They have distorted fantasies - of the floodgates opening wide and of being out of control. Since women particularly are not used to appropriate expression of anger in our culture, it is important that we educate especially our female candidates to deal with it.
This is not easy because formators too share cultural expectations in regard to expression of anger. They, generally, have a very negative attitude toward expressions of anger. Any sporadic outburst of anger from the candidate is condemned outright. An angry candidate is seen as a "problem case." Formators need to learn to deal with the expression of anger by candidates with greater empathy. It is also important to note here that candidates with anger have a lot of energy which can be directed constructively to fruitful ministry.
