A recent estimate of the piglet mortality, including
stillbirths, in commercial production is 20% to 24% of
the piglets born, based on production data from Canada,
Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, Sweden, and the
United States (Pedersen et al., 2010), with the early days
in life being the most critical for piglet survival (Edwards,
2002). Therefore, the need for actions, such as improving
the thermal climate for the neonates, to reduce the
considerable early piglet mortality remains.
