The ergogenic effects of chromium picolinate are
thought to be manifest especially when supplementation
is coupled with an exercise program that includes
resistance training (RT) (24). High-intensity progressive
RT has been shown to decrease FM, increase FFM,
increase muscle strength and size, and increase resting
metabolic rate and total energy requirements of older
people (17, 30), including frail elderly people (28, 29).
Thus chromium picolinate and RT may provide older
people with safe and effective ways to slow the progression
of, or to partially reverse, the age-related changes
in body composition, muscle function, and energy metabolism
and may prevent or treat the associated
health disorders.
