* Host family will provide a means of transportation for our Au Pair (either by car, bus system, carpool, etc.) to attend classes and AuPair Care events. You will need to pass the test for a state driver’s license within two months after arrival to drive in our state.
* Personal use of the car is a privilege!
* As long as you prove to be a safe and careful driver, you are welcome to use the car locally in Northern Virginia for transportation to and from class, to and from monthly Au Pair meetings, and to run local errands and visit nearby friends.
* Make and Model: Four Door Sedan 2002
* You will be added to host family’s automobile insurance policy and we have at least $10,000 medical on the policy. Please keep the copy of insurance with you at all times.
* When you are going to drive the car, please let us know where you are going and who you are with. If your plans change, please text us so we know where the car is located. We want to know this in case of an accident. Also, we want to be able to guide you about unsafe areas.
* Keep the car doors locked when parked and when driving.
* We want to conserve the mileage and wear-and-tear on the car to make it last longer and to keep the resale value. The following restrictions apply when you are driving the family car for personal use such as to classes, to church, the gym, to AuPair meetings, and to visit friends:
* You have permission to drive the car locally (within 10-15 miles from home) in the Northern Virginia area: 20-30 minutes each way. There are many shopping malls, restaurants, movie theaters, parks, and colleges to explore in our local area.
* No driving the car to D.C. or Maryland, or other parts of Virginia or other states. It is an older vehicle and not meant for long trips.
* Use public transportation when you want to go outside of our local area in Northern Virginia, such as into Washington D.C. or Maryland. We are near a Metro station. From there you can connect to Union Station, where you can catch buses and trains to other parts of Virginia and other states. (Our current Au Pair, for example, took bus trips with her friends to New York and Boston, as well as did a bus tour of California and Nevada, and flew with friends to Miami).
* Make plans to have the car home in our garage by midnight. Unsafe drivers (overtired, careless, and drunk drivers) are out in the late night and early morning hours. Host’s bedroom is over the garage so we will notice when the door opens and closes.
* If you will be leaving after 10 PM or coming home after midnight, arrange to ride in a friend’s car. Please let us know your plans by 9 PM, so that we can plan to reset the alarm for the night.
* Do not take the car out or keep the car out on the road when there is severe weather (heavy winds, flooding rains, icy roads). If we ask you to return home because of impending bad weather, we expect you to respect our request and return home as soon as possible.
* Never let anyone else drive our car. We are not insured to have anyone but you, host mom, and host grandmom drive the car.
* Make sure that your cell phone is put away when getting into the car.
* Do not place calls, send emails, or check texts or messages, while driving. It is against the law to drive while distracted in Virginia.
* If you need to use your cell phone, first stop the car in safe location and then make a call, text, or check your messages.
* If you have alcohol to drink – even one drink – don’t drive afterwards. Driving under the influence of alcohol or other controlled substances is dangerous and against the law. You will need to take the metro or taxi home.
* If you know that you will be drinking alcohol, do not take the car. Plan to have a friend, who will not drink, drive you home in their car.
* Please pay attention to the speed limits and do not go through red or yellow lights. Any speeding tickets or parking violations, while you are using the car, will be your responsibility to pay. Please notify us if any of these occur since they will affect our insurance rates.
* Fines usually have to be paid within a short period of time (within 15 days). After that time, fines typically double or other penalties are incurred.
* If you receive a ticket or fine related to the upkeep of the car (for example missing headlights) host family will take care of that. Please let us know immediately when you are aware of these types of items.
* Go slow for bikers - never pass bikers on turns/curves.
* Watch out for deer jumping out to cross the roads - especially at night.
* If you are ever in an accident, FIRST check to make sure everyone is Okay. If anyone is hurt or any vehicle cannot be driven away, the police should be called on 911. (NOTE: IF THE POLICE COME, THEY WILL ASK FOR YOUR LICENSE AND REGISTRATION. YOU SHOULD TELL THEM THE FULL TRUTH OF WHAT OCCURRED – EVEN IF YOU WERE AT FAULT.)
* If anyone is hurt – ask for medical attention. If the car is in an unsafe place (like the middle of a busy road or intersection), move the car to a safer place to the side of the road if you can.
* A police report should be provided. Always try to get the license plate of the other vehicle (state and letter/numbers). Generally, it is best to limit your comments to other drivers to finding out if they and their passengers are okay, to asking about damage to their car, and exchanging your name, address and insurance information. If they become angry, just say “Let the insurance companies worry about this. This is not my car, and I am just following the instructions that I was given by its owners, etc.”
* At a minimum, you should ask for the following information from the other driver:
License plates of all other vehicles involved in the accident.
Name, address and phone number of the other drivers.
Name of other driver’s insurance company, name the policy is listed under, and policy number. (They may not have this with them, or may refuse to give it if they feel they were not at fault. This is why you get the license plate number (including the state) so that if we need to track this information down later, we can.)
Type of vehicle – usually includes: your car make and model.
Names, addresses, and phone numbers of any witnesses
* You should provide the other driver with the following information:
* Your name, address and phone number.
* Our insurance information, Policy number, listed under host family name.
* Make, Model, and year of car.
* You will be required to give a report of the incident to the appropriate insurance company and the other driver will need to do the same.
* If possible, take pictures of the other car if there is damage to it or to your car. This helps the insurance company. Call us at home or on our cell phones
* In the event that our Au Pair is involved in a car accident, we agree to the following:
Amount of deductible Au Pair must pay if the accident happened while on or off duty is $250.
As outlined in the Au Pair/Host Family Agreement we have placed our Au Pair on our car insurance policy, and have the required $10,000 minimum medical coverage required to be eligible for the secondary medical coverage provided by Au Pair Care.
* If car breaks down, call the auto service to come and tow the car to the nearest garage. Then, call us.
* You will be responsible for putting premium gas in the car as needed since you will be the primary driver. Generally, you should refill the car when the tank goes to ½ a tank. Host family will give you $20 towards gas for each month that you are taking classes. You will pay for the rest.
* Please keep the car neat and clean. No smoking is allowed in the car.
* Watch for any messages displayed on the car’s screen. Tell us if there is a message so we can take the car in for servicing or if you have any concerns about how the car is functioning.
* With early notification of trouble, we can avoid major repairs. If we need to take the car in for repairs, we may all be inconvenienced by sharing the remaining cars – driving you to class, etc. We will try to keep the disruption down to a minimum.
* Usually host grandmom drives host child to and from school. (Host grandmom enjoys the special time with host child). If host grandmom is unavailable, we will need you to drive host child to and from school using the car seat
* All passengers in the car must be buckled in at all times. This rule applies to all others who may ride in our car or in any car in Virginia.
* All children under 8 years by law must ride in a booster seat or car seat.
