Objective : The objective of this study was to examine the effect of Medical care by alcohol withdrawal scale on alcohol dependent patients in psychiatric ward; Surin Hospital.
Setting : inpatient Psychiatric Ward, Surin Hospital
Study design : quasi experimental study
Patient and Method : 40 alcohol withdrawal patients, simple random sampling into two groups equally. The control group was treated by fixed schedule regimen method while the experimental group was treated by symptom-triggered regimen method using alcohol withdrawal scale. The study was conducted during November 1,2010 to April 30, 2011. The Medical care method based on treatment by symptom-triggered regimen method with alcohol withdrawal scale's Apichart et al,2001 and treatment model by The Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol 's Manood & Pramood,2005.The research instruments was alcohol withdrawal scale's Apichart et al,2001
Results : The study result showed that, the length of hospital stay, the duration of taking diazepam and other complication in the experimental group were reduced compared to the control group. The length of hospital stay of the control group was 15.85 days where as the experimental group 6.25 days. The duration of taking diazepam for the control group was 15.85 days compared to experimental group was 1.29 days. In addition, sixteen percent of the control group was received tighten pain, while the experimental group was totally safed.
Conclusion : The Medical care method based on treatment by symptom-triggered regimen method with alcohol withdrawal scale can reduce the length of hospital stay, duration of taking diazepam and other complication.
