For some research questions, a threat to external validity can be extremely serious. In particular, when research seeks cause-and-effect explanations for behavior in real-world situations, it is essential that the experimental results generalize outside the confines of the experiment. In these situations, researchers often attempt to maximize the realism of the experimental environment to increase the external validity of the results. Two standard techniques are used to accomplish this: simulation and field studies.
