Despite the paucity of previous research exploring mirror use by dogs, this study is consistent with others that suggest that some animals can use mirrors to solve problems. The ability to use a mirror as a problem-solving tool is not limited only to primates because pigs (Broom et al., 2009) and birds (Epstein et al., 1981) have also demonstrated this ability. Thus, it follows that dogs should be able to learn what a mirror represents because this ability appears to exist in several different taxonomic orders.
