3.3. Adherence to human intestinal epithelial cells
The adhesion ability of bacteria may vary in a strain-dependent manner. Adhesion of L. plantarum SY11 and L. plantarum SY12 was verified using the plating method. Upon the addition of about 8 Log CFU/well of L. plantarum SY11 and L. plantarum SY12, 7.11 ± 0.02 Log CFU/well (7.2% adhesion) and 6.86 ± 0.11 Log CFU/well (5.3% adhesion), respectively, adhered to HT-29 cell lines, whereas the addition of 8.27 Log CFU/well of L. acidophilus CH-2 resulted in the adherence of 2.31 ± 0.10 Log CFU/well (0.0% adhesion) to HT-29 cells. The 2 isolated strains showed strong adherence compared to L. acidophilus CH-2. Lactobacillus ssp. was reported as 2–10% adherence, Lactobacillus paracasei 34, L. paracasei ATCC 27092, and L. casei ATCC 393 was represented between 2% and 4% ( Monteagudo-Mera et al., 2012). Therefore, the adherence of L. plantarum SY11 and L. plantarum SY12 was verified a major criteria for probiotic selection.
