Man found dead underwater
A man was found dead in Phuket's Patong Bay in a possible suicide on Saturday afternoon.
After being alerted to the incident by a fisherman at 1.10pm, police came to the beach lined with rocks of various heights, according to a Thairath Online report.
Some 50 metres from the shore, they found the body of a shirtless man in grey sports shorts two metres deep in the sea in a vertical position.
The hands held on tightly to an underwater rock with the legs shooting up toward the sky. The body could be seen clearly from the surface because the water was clear.
Rescue workers dived down to release his hands and brought the body ashore. Police found no injuries or bruises on his body and estimated he might have been dead for 6-8 hours.
They sent the body to Patong Hospital for an autopsy.
On the beach nearby, police found a document issued by a tourist guide company in Muang Phuket folded neatly alongside a grey short-sleeved T-shirt and a pair each of grey jogging pants, grey socks and Onitsuka trainers.
The document indicated the body might belong to a Japanese working as a guide on the resort island.
