Infections of the thyroid are rare, but potentially
life threatening [1,2]. Acute suppurative thyroiditis
(ST) is far less common, particularly in children,
than the clinical types of subacute thyroiditis and
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The signs and symptoms of
infectious thyroiditis may mimic those of a variety
of noninfectious inflammatory conditions. Recognition
of the clinical and bacteriological features of
these infections is essential for prompt management.
