represented a single flight of opportunity. A more
definitive evaluation of the interaction of deep convection
and ozone formation requires systematic
sampling downwind of deep convective systems.
This would include a consistent use of tracers, sampling
at cloud base and cloud outflow layers, as part
of a sampling strategy that scaled from single cloud
to mesoscale and beyond. A hierarchy of coupled
models with consistent transport is required to integrate
the results to the regional scale. Studies of
convective systems like those on TRACE-A are
critical for assessing the global impact of deep convection.
Besides defining the magnitude of local
chemical effects, they provide dynamical and
chemical variables to validate the parameterizations
used in mesoscale and global models.
